Hey HCers, I am in need of some pickup wiring help. I just got an HB sized P90 and want to put it in the neck position, with a humbucker in the bridge. I will be wiring for 1 volume, 1 tone and a 3 way toggle. How do I go about doing this.

This will be surprisingly easy as you merely remember where the old humbucker had it's connections and reconnect your new ones. What do I do about the braid since my P90 has two wires and not 1 in addition to the braid? P90s are single conductor humbuckers, right? Both of those diagrams were great, except that my P90 has an extra wire.

If you find this is out of phase with the bridge pickup, swap them. A P90 is not a "single conductor humbucker.Pickups are one of the simplest electronic devices there are. They are simple enough to create yourself, with little more than a spool of wire usually a coated wirea magnet small pile magnets, or steel posts and a bar magnetand some fiberboard or plastic. Simply put, you create a bobbin out of the fiberboard and the magnets, then you wind the wire around the bobbin thousands of times.
The more you wind, the Hotter the pickup will be. The beginning of the wire is the Ground lead; the end of the wire is the Hot lead. The copper wire and the magnet create a small electromagnetic field that reacts to your guitar strings and creates an electrical signal with a constantly varying voltage in the Hot and Ground leads.
Your amplifier interprets these changing voltages as your guitar signal. The magnet determines the polarity of the pickup. It will either be facing North Up or South Up. If you are not sure what your pickup polarity is, there are two ways to find out. The first way is to use a regular old school compass and hold it to the pickup in question. The second way is to use another magnet. If the North side of the magnet repels away from the pickup, then the pickup has a North Up Polarity.
If the North side of the magnet sticks to the pickup then it has a South Up Polarity. For two single-coil pickups to have noise cancelling properties in the two and four switch positions one pickup must have a North Up Polarity and one pickup must have a South Up Polarity.
Humbucker pickups have two coils and they are designed so that one coil has North Up polarity and one coil has South Up polarity. There are a few ways to determine which way your coil is wound. If the pickup in question is a Single Coil, then many times you can check by holding the pickup with the leads coming out from the top.
Remember that the coil is wound from Ground to Hot. If the Ground wire is on the left, then the coil will be wound Counterclockwise to get to the right side of the pickup, resulting in a Reverse Wound pickup Fig 1.
If the Ground Wire is on the right, then the coil will be wound Clockwise to get to the left side of the pickup, resulting in a regular Standard Wound pickup Fig 2. The best way is to use a test meter. Lightly tap a screwdriver on the magnet while watching the meter. Now, if you get a positive reading, it is a Standard Wound Pickup; if the reading is negative, it is Reverse Wound.

Without getting too scientific, the volume and tone controls connect to ground, and a side effect of that is they create a path for your high-end frequencies to escape. Think of the value as a wall that your high-end frequencies need to jump over to escape.
The higher the value, the higher the wall, and the harder it is for the high end to escape, which results in a brighter tone going to your amp. Higher value pots make your guitar sound brighter. Lower value pots make your guitar sound darker. Often, when guitarists talk about the values of their volume and tone pots, they are talking about a guitar such as a Fender Stratocaster or a Gibson Les Paul that has one or more of the same type of pickup in the guitar.
There are countless models and brands of pickups, but electric guitar pickups are usually one of two kinds: single coil or humbucking. The Fender Strat, Fender Telecaster, and countless other guitars use the single coil pickup, which is known for its in-your-face sound, bite, and clear notes. Single coil pickups are also known for piercing sharp tones that are brittle and harsh.
To combat the harsh tones of single coil pickups, we pair them with k pots. The k pots allow enough high-end frequencies to escape, it warms up the tone, and takes off some of the harsh edges. Humbucker pickups are nothing more than two single coil pickups working together. The two coils are close to one another, creating a slight phase cancelation between them. This phase cancellation effect causes high-end frequencies to cancel out, producing a warmer tone than is produced by a single coil.
To prevent the loss of any further high end, we pair the humbucker pickups with k pots. The k pots do an excellent job of preserving what high end remains after the phase cancelation.
Guitars that use a combination of single coil and humbucker pickups are known as super Strats. Ibanez, Jackson, and many other guitar companies produce guitars with combination pickup schemes. For the guitarist in search of the perfect tone, however, mixing humbuckers and single coil pickups can present a real problem. With such a combination, choosing to go with the k pots can make your single coils sound harsh and brittle.
Going with the k pots can cause your humbuckers to sound dark and muddy. Unfortunately, there is no perfect solution to mixing humbuckers and single coil pickups.
