Available for the GMC Sierra 5.Although it was faint, we mean, really faint, we thought it best to pull the polished M Radix blower off and visit Magnuson Superchargers in sunny Ventura, California for a full rebuild on our trusty supercharger. In one hit, the truck went from a stock cruiser to a low second show, go, and tow-truck that served as a daily driver and a tow-rig pulling around project cars for the past decade.

Although we previously had no idea that Magnuson had such a service, we were obviously in the minority since there was an entire shelf of different blowers waiting for a refurbish, a rebuild, or just some parts. Mike, a senior tech at Magnuson, manages the service facility at the headquarters made quick work of our Radix supercharger rebuild by immediately taking it down to the bare parts.

Mike started the teardown by splitting the upper and lower intake manifold apart. He carefully inspected every nut, bolt and inch of the parts in search of any problem areas. After the intercooler is removed and the blower is separated from the plenum, the snout of the supercharger comes off next.

Mike then removed the rotor pack to inspect for any blemishes or damage. In our case, even aftermiles, the blades still looked good—a true testament to the quality of the Magnuson blower.

The blower gears are then inspected statically and while being rotated to make sure nothing is out of the norm. The front pulley, bearing and the internal components of the blower snout are next on the list to leave the building. The front supercharger bearings are inspected to make sure nothing is notched or out of spec. Mike even checked the blower snout case for roundness to insure nothing was going to be a problem after the rebuild. Now the bypass valve and its associated components can be inspected and then removed.

There are two bearings pressed into the supercharger case. Mike heats them to aide in the removal process. Way down inside the case are the two aforementioned bearings that must be removed before the case can be thoroughly inspected and cleaned.

Off to the cleaners they go; Magnuson literally rebuilds and refurbishes the superchargers back to like-new condition. After the supercharger is disassembled down to the bare components, Mike heads into the warehouse to get all of the necessary parts for the rebuild. Magnuson keeps thousands of parts on hand so turn-around time on a blower rebuild is just a few days.

The main snout shaft is greased and mated to new bearings before it will be pressed into place. The original pulley is put back in place and torqued to the factory specs. Remember the two small bearings mounted inside the case?

Here the press and the proprietary tooling come together to press the bearings into the case. All new bypass valve support hardware is installed to make sure the blower is as good as new. The manifold is placed in an ultrasonic cleaner and comes out as good as new. Mike even replaces all of the original O-rings with new versions for a leak-free fit.

Currently, there is a 1UZFE manifold being made by Jordys to be fitting with any root style supercharger. From what Jordys stated, this manifold will work on most of the root style superchargers like the M90 or larger. M90 is widely found in Ford Thunderbird and other GM cars. They are cheaply found on auction sites. The above picture is a M90 root supercharger. However, the 1UZFE crank pulley is only 5. Therefore, the smallest supercharger pulley will be limited by the radiator hose.

Most magazines shy away from head-to-head comparison tests because there is always one winner and lots of losers — not too good for the advertising side of their business. Read on after the jump to see how the different superchargers stack up to one another.

Jerry Magnuson has been building supercharger systems for more than 40 years. Due to the endless variables, most past supercharger shootouts have ended up comparing apples to oranges.

To find out the real truth, the actual comparison test needed to be extremely controlled — same engine tested on the same day with the same ambient air temperature. The fuel would be octane pump gas, all from the same source and batch. To truly evaluate the supercharger only, the same Magnuson equal-length-runner intake manifold with integral water-to-air intercooler was used.

The peak boost target was 7. A totally mainstream engine was selected for the test — a GM LS-style 5. It remained totally stock except for a Lingenfelter Performance Engineering GT cam with Corvette ZO6 valvesprings, both needed to extend the power cure through rpm. The superchargers for the comparison included three Magna Charger models, a standarda hybrid and a hybrid They also tested a Whipple Twin-Screw and a Procharger centrifugal model.

The dyno test measured several parameters including supercharger discharge temperature, intercooler discharge temp, boost curves and of course horsepower and torque curves.

By using the same manifold and intercooler for all tests, the changeover and back-to-back testing was accomplished in a single day. It will be more responsive make boost sooner and will require less horsepower to drive.

For example at rpm the Magna Charger is producing ft. The other superchargers faired much better but due to their respective size or capacity, they were at a disadvantage to the mighty little MP The Whipple screw is better suited for larger engines or higher rpm.

At rpm it gave up 50 ft. A final analysis clearly shows that the most important factor for a street supercharger is the boost curve. When you hit the throttle at rpm, what boost is your supercharger making? From an overall efficiency viewpoint, all of the superchargers are pretty close with similar discharge temps dumping into the manifold and past the intercooler. Horsepower at 7.

One final note: all engines that run on pump gas are compression limited and when you add boost to an engine you are essentially adding compression. Regardless of supercharger style, there is a limit that if exceeded will destroy the engine. With octane pump gas that limit seems to be around 7.
